A Florida man who deliberately drove his vehicle into a pole in an attempt to kill a woman and her unborn baby has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Onix Afanador was sentenced last week after he was convicted of aggravated battery on a pregnant woman, according to the Pensacola News Journal.

Authorities said the 36-year-old man was driving down a Florida highway last June when he purposefully veered his vehicle into a utility pole.

Prosecutors said the woman and her baby were not harmed.

The woman, who was not identified, told police that Afanador had been physical with her before the crash and had allegedly threatened to kill her and her unborn child.

She was 12 weeks at the time of the incident.

Witnesses told investigators at the time that Afanador had been driving erratically and recklessly before the vehicle crashed. They also said it appeared that Afanador drove the car towards the pole on purpose.

Since Afanador was sentenced as a habitual felony offender he will have to serve 10 years in prison before he’s eligible for release.
