Florida mother charged with killing newborn twins cried in 911 call

A Florida mother charged with murdering her newborn twins told a 911 dispatcher that she had only given birth to one baby, passed out and then found the little boy ‘cold and blue’ when she woke up.

Rachael Lynn Thomas, 30, told the dispatcher that she didn’t know she was pregnant until she gave birth on the toilet at her home in West Melbourne, Florida on Sunday.

‘I had a baby and then I passed out, and now the baby’s not responding and I don’t know what to do,’ Thomas said in a recording of the 911 call.

‘It’s not doing anything and it’s cold and it’s blue.

Rachael Lynn Thomas, 30, was charged with murder and child abuse after police found her newborn twins unresponsive in her home in West Melbourne, Florida on Sunday

‘I got him wrapped in a towel. I’ve tried cleaning him off.’

The 911 dispatcher gave Thomas instructions on how to give CPR to the newborn until first responders arrived.

Thomas, who claimed that she had passed out for a few hours after the boy was born, made no mention of the baby girl she had also given birth to.

The baby boy was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Thomas, who has two other children, was arrested after police returned to her home and found a baby girl’s body dumped in a trash can.

‘After discarding her in the trash can, Thomas threw additional trash on top of Baby Jane in an attempt to conceal her,’ police said.

Both babies suffered severe blunt force trauma to their heads, according to the medical examiner.

Thomas had initially told police she didn't even know she was pregnant when she claimed to have given birth while on the toilet at her home in West Melbourne on Sunday

The umbilical cord was also wrapped around the girl’s neck and a foreign object was found lodged in her throat.

Police said Thomas’ story of giving birth on the toilet did not match the injuries sustained by the newborns.

Both babies are believed to have been carried a full 39 week term.

Police said Thomas gave birth to ‘healthy twins’ and then ‘took their lives’.

Thomas has been charged with one count of premeditated first degree murder, two counts of felony murder and two counts of aggravated child abuse.

Her two other children, and eight-year-old boy and one-year-old boy, have both been placed in the care of other family members by the Florida Department of Children and Families.

Thomas is being held in the Brevard County Jail on a no bond status.
