Florida police searching for driver who struck a cyclist and then FLED the scene after speeding through bike crossing lights

  • The St. Petersburg Police Department shared that a driver of a white Chrysler 200 struck the cyclist as he was riding on the Pinellas Trail on November 1
  • Cyclist has been identified as 42-year-old Steven Weldon
  • Footage shows Weldon making his way to the crossing, which was flashing for bikes to make it across
  • He shared that he rode the bike everyday for work   

Police in Florida are looking to identify a driver who was seen on surveillance footage hitting a bicyclist before fleeing the scene. 

The St. Petersburg Police Department shared that a driver of a white Chrysler 200 struck the cyclist – identified as 42-year-old Steven Weldon – as he was riding on the Pinellas Trail.

Footage shows Weldon making his way to the crossing, which was flashing for bikes to make it across.

He can be seen waving his arms as cars disregard the crossing and speed by. Weldon doesn’t appear to notice the car that will eventually hit him as he makes his way across the street. 

The driver did stop his vehicle but only to move Weldon’s bicycle out of the street so that he could flee the scene. 

Weldon suffered broken bones but his injuries are said to be not life-threatening, police shared on a Facebook press release.

The 42-year-old father showed off his mangled bike and explained that he used it everyday to get to work.  

He shares that he believes the driver was freaked out that Weldon was not injured more.

‘I think he panicked at first and then when the fear set in that’s what made him leave,’ Weldon explained to WFTS.
