A Florida sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded a man who was allegedly wielding a screwdriver after a confrontation in a residential neighborhood.

Babak Payrow, 35, was shot by Deputy David Cloud early Thursday near Tampa.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s officials said in a news release that Cloud was on routine patrol when he saw a man walking suspiciously through the neighborhood.

When he got out of his patrol car to talk to the man, the man pulled a 10-inch screwdriver from a bag and aggressively approached him.

Authorities said the deputy gave Payrow numerous commands to back up, but the man continued to walk towards him.

Payrow, who was shot at least once, was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Cloud was not injured in the incident. He will be placed on routine administrative leave.

Deputies say Payrow has a prior arrest for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence and resisting arrest.

According to the sheriff’s office, Payrow has family in the area and often walks to visit them.

Criminal charges are pending in this case and the investigation is ongoing.
