Floyd Mayweather pays tribute to supporters’ tattoos

Floyd Mayweather is no stranger to having his face plastered across billboards along the Las Vegas strip.

But images of the former five-weight world champion, who retired last month following victory over Conor McGregor, are also emblazoned across the skin of many of his supporters.

On Friday the 40-year-old uploaded a series of photographs of tattoos sent to him, including iconic images from his fights against Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton. ‘I truly love & appreciate my fans! This tattoo artist is unbelievable,’ he wrote on Instagram.

One of the tattoos showed Mayweather sporting the colours of Mexico and a sombrero ahead of his 2007 showdown with Oscar De La Hoya.

Mayweather wore the provocative outfit, designed to irk the Mexican-American fighter and his supporters, for his ringwalk for the MGM Grand Garden Arena fight.

It was, at the time, the richest fight in boxing history and catapulted Mayweather to boxing super-stardom and changed his career for ever.

10 years on, Mayweather bowed out having reportedly become the first fighter in history to make $1billion in earnings.

Though Mayweather was often booed by supporters, he became the biggest draw in boxing. His recent fight with McGregor broke the all-time record for number of Pay-Per-View buys

Mayweather retired from boxing last month following his victory over McGregor. The American won all 50 of his professional fights and is the richest fighter in boxing history

In honour of his incredible career, one tattoo depicted the unbeaten American surrounded by dollar bills. Mayweather took on the nickname ‘Money’ in 2017 and launched his own brand ‘The Money Team’, as illustrated in one of the other pieces of body art.

Supporters have also covered themselves in images of several of ‘Money”s other notable victories. One fan has an accurate depiction of his stoppage victory over Britain’s Ricky Hatton, others have chosen images of his respective wins over Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Juan Manuel Marquez.

One fan went further than most, however, by dedicating his entire back to the unbeaten American. The supporter’s body was covered in images of Mayweather and the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where the 40-year-old enjoyed some of his most famous wins.
