Food for thought, Gareth? Southgate watches on as England players train after dramatic Slovakia win with Jude Bellingham – who is being investaged for gesture after his goal – all smiles

Some of England’s squad players trained on Monday just hours after the Three Lions’ dramatic win over Slovakia, as Gareth Southagte watched on.

If it hadn’t been for an extra 60-odd seconds, Southgate may not have taken another training session as England boss, but Jude Bellingham’s late equaliser meant the game went to extra time, with England winning.

Southgate’s side have now booked their place in the last eight on Saturday, when they will take on Switzerland for a spot in the semi-final of Euro 2024.

Monday proved to be a somewhat recovery day for the players involved in Sunday’s game, with just 11 player training outside at the start of the week.

They included the likes of Luke Shaw, Anthony Gordon and Conor Gallagher, with the other players undergoing recovery work elsewhere.

Shaw continues to train despite not playing a minute in the tournament so far, but England will be waiting on his availability with five days still to go before the Switzerland game.

Kieran Trippier, who has been filling in for the Manchester United man at left back, went off injured against Slovakia, meaning Southgate may need to find a replacement for Saturday.

One option is Bukayo Saka, who impressed in the role on Sunday having moved there after Trippier’s injury, while Shaw may finally get some minutes under his belt.

Aother options include Joe Gomez and Ezri Konsa, though the latter may be chosen at centre back following Marc Guehi’s suspension.

Other players in training were both reserve goalkepeers Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson, though Jordan Pickford was also seen out on the field briefly as he spoke to media, though he wasn’t spotted training.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ollie Watkins, Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez, Adam Wharton and Jarrod Bowen were the remaining players who were out on the field.

Bellingham, meanwhile, is to be investigated for a ‘potential violation of the basic rules of decent conduct’ after he made a seemingly-crude gesture following his dramatic equaliser.

UEFA have launched a disciplinary probe amid claims the England star directed his gesture towards the Slovakia bench in Gelsenkirchen.

The player himself was quick to take to social media to point out that the act was an in joke aimed towards close friends who were in the stands. ‘Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight,’ he added, on X.
