Footage shows moment cyclist is hit by a car in Melbourne

This is the horrifying moment a cyclist hurtles through the air after being hit by a car from behind.

Matt Atherton, 38, was cycling on Fullarton Road at Airport West in Melbourne’s north-west about 5.30pm on September 19 when he was hit by the car.

The impact threw the father-of-two into the air causing him to suffer a broken shoulder blade and sustain serious injuries to his face and knee.

Mr Atherton underwent knee surgery and required 20 stitches in his face, Nine News reported.

His $2,500 bike was also written off.

Speaking from his hospital bed on Thursday, the father-of-two said the most difficult thing was not being able to go home to his young children Jackson and Montana.

While he was badly injured, Mr Atherton said he was lucky to be alive.

‘I should be dead, honestly, I cannot believe I’m here. But I’m here which is a good thing,’ Mr Atherton told Nine News.

‘I don’t know how fast that guy was going but boy he hit me hard.’

Mr Atherton was cycling on the far left side of the lane when two cars veered to the right and went around him.

When the third car hit, the driver slammed on the brakes and ran to Mr Atherton’s aid.

Despite Mr Atherton’s injuries, the driver of the car was not charged and walked away without penalty.

After reviewing CCTV footage, Victoria Police said there was no crime detected.

Police said the 22-year-old Strathmore man would not face charges because he stopped at the scene to help the cyclist, and assisted police with their enquiries.

Mr Atherton was shocked the driver would not face charges.

‘To be walking away scot-free, that’s not good enough,’ he said.

He urged drivers to exercise caution so everyone could get home safely to their families.
