Footage shows thieves steal Good Samaritan’s Ute

CCTV footage has captured the moment brazen thieves steal a Good Samaritan’s Ute while he’s helping to rescue a lost autistic boy from a busy road.

Melbourne man Aaron, 39, was driving on Rosamond Road at Maidstone in the city’s inner-west on Tuesday night about 7.15pm when he saw the 14-year-old boy walking into oncoming traffic.

‘He was running quite erratically… and then he was smack-bank in the middle of the road… I thought he was going to get hit by a car,’ Aaron told Nine News on Wednesday.

In the CCTV footage, Aaron can be seen pulling his Ute onto the side of the road, getting out and walking towards the boy.

‘I said ‘hey mate, do you want to come off to the side of the road and just walk with me for a minute’, and calm him down,’ Aaron said.

Aaron, together with another driver, spoke to the boy and coaxed him away from the road.

They stayed with him until the police came.

The two men were questioned by the police on Wednesday night but the man’s ute remains missing.

The young autistic boy’s mother said she was indebted to Aaron, and said she was devastated his car was stolen.

Aaron said he didn’t regret helping the 14-year-old boy, but the incident highlighted the fact there were a few ‘bad eggs’ in the world.

‘There are people who want to do the right thing and put themselves on the line, including the police officers. Then there are bad eggs that want to take advantage of the situation,’ he said.
