Football legend says Aussie Ange Postecoglou could be next in line to coach Premier League powerhouse Manchester City following Tottenham turnaround

Manchester United great Gary Neville has declared ‘Aussie’ Ange Postecoglou could one day replace Pep Guardiola at Premier League giants Manchester City.

It followed Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest, which saw his team climb up to fifth spot on the ladder.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the former Red Devils defender labelled the 58-year old’s impact on Spurs ‘staggering.’

‘We see managers sometimes say they need time to build a style at a club, or they need time to get used to the players,’ the popular football pundit said.

‘What he [Postecoglou] has done in a short period of time is staggering because he’s not only implemented what would be the idea of a play, but he’s put something in place that is breathtaking to watch.’

Neville then suggested Manchester City could make a play for the ex-Socceroos boss, with the Citizens set to lose the all-conquering Guardiola in the summer of 2025.

‘Spurs fans won’t like this but he is amazing, and if you’re Manchester City losing Pep Guardiola in a year or two, you’d be looking at Ange Postecoglou now thinking ‘wow that’s exactly what we want to see’,’ Neville added.

‘But for the time being, Spurs have just got to enjoy this because it’s brilliant to watch.

‘What they can do is enjoy one of the best brands of football I’ve seen in 10 years since I finished playing football. I love watching Tottenham Hotspur play.’

The high praise from Neville was interesting given in October he stated Postecoglou’s style was ‘naïve’ – and that he was merely copying Guardiola’s tactics with the use of inverted fullbacks.

After joining the north London club from Celtic, Postecoglou broke the record for most points earned by a Tottenham manager in their first nine fixtures.

He then became the first manager to win Manager of the Month for the first three months of a season.

Astonishingly, in some quarters his appointment by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy in June wasn’t well received.

And when star striker Harry Kane then left the club two months later to join German giants Bayern Munich, lean times were predicted to follow by many football experts and anxious fans.

But as he has done his entire managerial career, Postecoglou has silenced his detractors, playing an enterprising brand of football that has won the hearts of countless fans along the way.

Not bad for a bloke from Melbourne who continues to show his wares in the world’s best club competition.
