Football pays tribute to Rob Burrow: England fans hold minute’s applause for the Rugby League legend at St James’ Park ahead of Three Lions’ friendly with Bosnia after his death

England fans at St James’ Park took a moment before Monday’s international friendly to pay tribute to Rob Burrows after his passing. 

Burrow’s tragic death was announced on Sunday evening by his former club Leeds Rhinos, aged 41. 

The former rugby star was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in 2019, two years after retiring from a 17-year career in which he won eight Super League titles. 

Since his death tributes have been paid by former teammates, fans, and a number leading figures from both in and out of the sporting world. 

Before kick-off, England’s national team paid their own tribute to the man, with a minutes applause to honour him before their game against Bosnia and Herzegovina. 

Burrow’s impact was so great it spread to all sports, and football paid it’s tribute before game

Whilst those in attendance at the ground, clapped for the rugby legend, the England band among them could be heard playing ‘There’s only Rob Burrow’ during the tribute. 

On the screens around the stadium, a picture of Burrow cast down over the pitch and reflected the sadness of his death.  

Presenting for Channel 4’s coverage of the game, host Jules Breach said ‘The crowd are taking a moment to pay tribute to Rob Burrow, who sadly passed away yesterday. 

‘Rob’s brilliant career on the pitch and his brave battle with motor neurone disease are equally inspiring and he’ll be greatly missed by fans of all sports.’

Rugby will pay it’s own tribute to Burrow before the mens and women’s Challenge Cup Final’s this weekend.  

There will be a minute’s silence before the finals and a round of applause in the seventh minute of the games.

Burrow enjoyed a 17-year rugby league career that saw him win eight Super League titles

He was awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours List in 2021 for his services to MND and sport

Players will wear black armbands and there are plans to lay floral tributes by the rugby league statute outside Wembley. 

A sea of floral tributes were already laid within hours of Burrow’s death outside  Leeds Rhinos’ stadium as fans sent their own messages of condolences to their club legend.

Since being diagnosed with the condition, Burrow worked tirelessly to raise awareness around of MND, so much so he was awarded an MBE in 2021 for his services to the support and sport in general.
