Football star threatened to ruin his secret lover’s life

An English footballer threatened to ruin the life of his former secret lover after she exposed their affair to his girlfriend, a court heard.

A court heard Hibernian midfielder Marvin Bartley, 31, subjected Ainsley McRae to threats and persistent phone calls when she confessed their illicit relationship to his partner of five years, named only as Sasha.

The former Bournemouth and Burnley player also drove from his club’s training ground in Edinburgh to Miss McRae’s workplace in Glasgow to confront her on the issue.

A sheriff found Bartley guilty and said his evidence was ‘not credible or reliable’ as he was fined £400 at Paisley Sheriff Court.

According to The Sun, the pair met over Facebook last year and then began meeting in person, with Bartley making plans to celebrate her birthday and ‘promising to tell his girlfriend about them’.

When this did not happen, Miss McRae contacted Sasha over Facebook to break the news, prompting Bartley to threaten her in an ‘aggressive’ phone call and warn her to ‘protect the people around you’.

The court heard Miss McCrae, of East Kilbridge, became ‘so scared she was in floods of tears and her teeth were chattering’.

The Sun reported her work colleague David Randall told the court a man he believed to be Bartley was ‘angry and loud’ when he called her on the phone in January and was ‘accusing her of lying’.

He told the court: ‘He started saying he felt as though she was trying to ruin his life. He said he’d try and ruin her life the way she was trying to ruin his life. It clearly was a threat.

Mr Randall added he had never met Bartley but Miss McRae had referred to him as Marvin on the call.

Bartley told the court he had only met Miss McRae twice during a time that he and Sasha were ‘on a break’ and that he told her he had a girlfriend.

He also claimed she had sent him a topless photo of herself and denied he was angry with her, describing himself as ‘disappointed’ she told his partner about them.

Sheriff Seith Ireland found against him and ordered the footballer to pay the fine within 28 days.
