Footballer facing lengthy suspension after confronting footage shows player allegedly ATTACKING referee

An amateur soccer player is facing the possibility of a life ban after allegedly attacking a referee during a match.

The un-named footballer, who is registered with Dragon Warriors FC in Adelaide, allegedly placed the game day official in a headlock seconds after a scuffle started on the field.

SA Police have confirmed they are investigating the alleged incident, which was captured on film.

As a club, Dragon Warriors FC players have also been suspended from all competitions pending the outcome of the investigation.

The alleged attack unfolded during a division four South Australian Amateur Soccer League (SAASL) men’s match between Dragon Warriors FC and AC Unito on August 13.

In a statement, Football SA – the governing body for football in South Australia – said the SAASL did ‘not in any way condone the conduct of individuals involved.’

‘Football SA will provide necessary support to SAASL throughout the process,’ the statement read.

In another statement, SAASL said it was aware of the incident and footage of the alleged referee attack.

‘We strongly condemn any form of violence towards match officials and are determined to ensure that any such behaviour is stamped out of the game,’ a spokesperson told the Adelaide Advertiser.

‘SAASL has immediately launched an investigation and will continue to gather information relating to the incident.

‘After the investigation is completed, the matter will be referred to the SAASL Disciplinary Committee.’

The alleged incident follows experienced Sydney referee Khodr Yaghi allegedly being attacked on the field in May.

Yaghi was left with fractured ribs and a broken jaw following an alleged on-field attack at Padstow Park.

Adam Abdallah, 25, was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and affray after footage of the incident went viral.

Abdallah was also initially jailed on remand before being granted bail in the NSW Supreme Court. 

The matter remains before the courts.
