Footballer Reece Thompson jailed over abuse of ex-girlfriend recalled to prison after tweets

A former League Two footballer jailed for a horrific domestic assault on his ex-girlfriend has been recalled to prison just a month after being released.

Reece Thompson, 26, was sentenced to three years and four months in prison and given a 10-year restraining order over the terrifying abuse of Danielle Thomas 33.

Nottingham Crown Court heard how he battered his ex-partner with an iron bar, poured paint over her and then made her lick it off the floor.

He was jailed in April last year after pleading guilty to damaging property, assault occasioning ABH and inflicting GBH, but was given early release.

But after tweeting about his case and discussing it with a national newspaper, he is back behind bars.

The Ministry of Justice told MailOnline Thompson was recalled to prison earlier this month to serve the rest of his sentence after breaching the terms of his licence.

Officials did not confirm why he was brought back into custody.

It came, however, after he tweeted asking: ‘Need to dig the boots back out. Anyone need a few goals banging in?’

Someone responded saying: ‘I’ve been redecorating the back bedroom and spilt some paint.

‘Do I hit the Mrs with an iron bar & make her lick it up or just use a cloth?’

Thompson replied with a smiling face and thumbs up emoji and wrote: ‘Pretty sure from post examination no paint or other substances were found in the persons stomach/system. So that rules the paint part out.’

He later tweeted: ‘Apparently I’m not allowed to voice my opinion or five out any information surrounding the case, on social media (as I’m in the public eye)!!

‘Sorry to disappoint you lovely people but I’m not allowed to reply or comment on the tweets you are putting forward to me,’ followed by a smile and thumbs up emoji.

He also gave an interview in the national press expressing the desire to start afresh and rebuild his life.

Thompson said: ‘I love playing football it’s my life. I’ve made a mistake and been punished for it.

‘But the opinion of others don’t bother me in the slightest. The only opinion that’s matters to me is my own opinion.

‘Everyone else is irrelevant in my eyes. All these people showing hate towards me calling me a scumbag will only drive me and motivate me even more to try and make a comeback and prove people wrong. I have no doubt in my mind I will make a comeback.’

Thompson had signed to play for Mickleover Sports FC in the BetVictor Northern Premier Division since making his appeal to find a new club.

He used to play for Retford United, Bosted United and Guiseley AFC.

After he was jailed, Miss Thomas revealed she feared for her life and suffered a broken jaw and severe bruising at the hands of Thompson during the three-day ordeal.

After several violent other violent incidents, in September last year, Thompson opened a tin of paint Miss Thomas had purchased to cover up marks from other outbursts.

She said: ‘He poured it all over me. Feeling the thick paint spilling down my head and body, I was completely humiliated. He then made me lick it off the floor.’

Thompson then allowed his girlfriend to have a shower before ordering her upstairs to the bedroom.

She said: ‘He grabbed an iron bar, from where he’d smashed up my daughter’s wardrobe. ‘Get on all fours on the bed,’ he told me. Terrified, I obliged.

‘Nothing could have prepared me for what came next. Reece smacked the metal bar against me, hard, five times.’

It was after this incident that police visited Miss Thomas’s property and she was  taken to a safe house.

The pair had grown up in the same village in Doncaster and he started messaging her on Facebook when he was 24.

Miss Thomas had originally turned down his request for a date as she had been ‘looking for someone more mature’.

But in January 2018 she finally agreed to meet him for a coffee, after months of persistent messages from him.

The couple started seeing each other regularly and Miss Thomas said within a few months she started to fall for him.

She described it as a ‘whirlwind romance’ and after they had been dating for a few months she introduced him to her children.

But after four months of dating she woke up to Thompson hitting her.

Describing the incident, she said he started grabbing her hair and hitting her on the side of the head. She questioned what he was doing but he continued.

He told her that he had found a message on her phone from a mutual friend, which Miss Thomas said had been sent four years ago.

She cried at him to ‘please’ stop. He then calmed down and apologised, claiming he ‘just got jealous’.

But after several more violent incidents and the final one involving the paint and iron bar, he was arrested, convicted and jailed on April 3 last year.
