Footy legend Nathan Buckley forced to buy back his own AFL medals and jumpers after divorce sees his footy memorabilia go to auction

  • Collingwood legend split from wife Tania in 2020
  • Has already managed to buy back some of his most prized memorabila
  • Will be forced to part with much more as his career goes under the hammer

AFL Hall of Fame legend Nathan Buckley will be forced to buy back prized possessions including premiership medals and jumpers with his career to go under the hammer at auction as part of his divorce.

After separating from his wife Tania in 2020, all of Buckley’s memorabilia was appraised and will now be sold to the highest bidder.

That leaves Buckley forced into the tough decision on which memorabila to buy back and which to let go.

He has already successfully repurchased his 2003 Brownlow Medal, 2002 Norm Smith Medals, and his six Copelands trophies for an undisclosed amount.

However, over 200 items from Buckley’s football career over the last three decades are to be auctioned at Charles Leski Auctions on May 1.

Which means the Collingwood champion is reluctantly parting with items he once hoped would return to the clubs and institutions he played for.

Buckley amassed a huge amount of footy memorabila during his time as Collingwood player, captain and coach but will now have to say goodbye to a large chunk of it

‘You do collect a bit of stuff from a lifetime in the game and these items are the sum of the last 30 years in footy,’ Buckley told News Corp.

‘Thankfully, I was able to, in effect, buy back my medals after they were valued. It’s a crazy world.

‘I’ve never viewed these items as commodities and thought that in the fullness of time they would be returned to the clubs or institutions I represented at the time.

‘I do still hope this transpires.’

Auctioneer Charles Leski said Buckley’s divorce was the driving force behind the former Magpie’s decision to part with the items.

‘This collection, sold under difficult circumstances, gives us a rare glimpse into the life of a sporting hero,’ Leski said.

‘Nathan Buckley is an Australian sporting legend.’

Nathan and Tania married in December 2002 but separated in December 2020, ending their marriage after nearly 18 years.

They announced their separation on Tania’s Instagram about a year after it happened while she listed the five-bedroom mansion they shared together $18million in March.

The couple has two teenage sons, Jett and Ayce, who live with Tania in the mansion.

Nathan is now in a relationship with 35-year-old business manager Brodie Ryan, making their relationship public in October 2022.

Ryan previously said that she and Nathan share similar backgrounds, which helped them connect.

Despite being 17 years apart in age, she believes they share a lot of common interests and motivate each other to improve daily.

The couple spent Christmas together and also holidayed to the United States where they saw U2 and a number of other attractions.
