A football club on the Gold Coast has been sent into shock after a player unexpectedly collapsed during a soccer match on Tuesday evening.

The player, aged over 50, is fighting for his life after his health took a turn for the worse moments before kick off at Musgrave Park. He was moments away from playing in an over-50s match.

Legends Football Club Gold Coast president Sam Indelicato provided more information on the incident.

‘My understanding is that he felt unwell, walked up to the sideline and collapsed,’ he said.

‘By the time he went down, within a minute or two we had a defib-machine and someone was doing CPR.’

An ambulance was called to the scene at approximately 6.55pm and the player was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital. He is in a critical condition and fighting for his life.

The man lives on the Gold Coast alone and is a popular figure at the club where he has been a long-time member and regularly attends first team matches.

‘His family live in the UK, but everyone here is concerned for him. The club is here for him,’ Mr Indelicato said.

‘We all want him to make a speedy recovery, we’re all rallying behind him.’
