‘Look out there’s an egg behind you’: Footy Show host Sam Newman is slammed for mocking NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s accent in the wake of the Christchurch shooting

  • She vowed never to name Brenton Tarrant, the man accused of terror attack
  • After the speech Sam Newman called her accent ‘grating’ in a Twitter post

Footy Show host Sam Newman has been criticised for mocking New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s accent.

On Tuesday, Ms Ardern gave a moving speech in parliament during which she vowed never to name Brenton Tarrant, the man accused of attacking two mosques in Christchurch on Friday.

Afterwards, Newman wrote on Twitter: ‘Thank heavens NZ prime minister said she will never mention the name of the terrorist. How grating is her accent?’

Dozens responded to the Tweet, calling Newman ‘sexist’ and ‘backward.’

Several New Zealanders defended their prime minister, saying he was a top leader – unlike Scott Morrison, Australia’s embattled PM.

One Kiwi wrote: ‘We’re extraordinarily proud of our PM’s empathy, dignity and strength in this awful time.

‘She has articulated our grief, our sympathy, our shock, our anger and our determination to change our lax gun laws. She speaks for us, and like us.’

One Australian man said Newman was just trying to get attention.

He wrote: ‘This fool is just trying to get attention as his relevance declines from little to nothing. Prime Minister Adern is a great leader and head of government – far, far better than our own.’

Another commenter replied to Newman, saying: ‘It would seem you have that depressingly common gift of joking at another’s expense.

‘The NZ PM’s words have done so much to help so many deal with an appalling, evil act. That’s all that matters.’

‘Look out, there’s an egg behind you,’ a fourth person joked, referring to the moment a teenager egged Senator Fraser Anning after he aired a shocking statement blaming Muslim immigration for the New Zealand terror attack.

Mr Anning slapped 17-year-old Will Connolly before his right-wing cronies violently held the youngster to the ground.
