Footy superstar shows American TV star how to eat a pie

A former footy superstar has shown an American sports reporter the proper way to eat an Aussie meat pie – after his first attempt went horribly awry.

Ex-AFL player Dane Swan is in the United States as an ambassador for Four’N Twenty pies, and on Thursday he was centre stage at an NBA game in Philadelphia featuring Australian rookie sensation Ben Simmons.

Swan showed ESPN reporter Darren Rovell the proper way to eat a pie after he was previously filmed using a knife and fork.

This time around under Swan’s watchful eye Rovell used his hands to take a bite out of the pie, complete with a squirt of tomato sauce on top.

Rovell then raised his hand in triumph as the crowd at Wells Fargo Arena cheered him on.

The game between Simmons’ Philadelphia 76ers and the Chicago Bulls was an ‘Australan Heritage match’ and was attended by celebrities and Australian Ambassador to the United States Joe Hockey.

‘I’m not good at much but I’m good at entertaining and I had to find something to do after footy so I thought this would be a lot of fun,’ Swan told the Herald Sun.

‘If I can get paid to travel and watch sporting events, that’s right in my wheelhouse.’

Fans at the game in Philadelphia were given t-shirts with a boxing kangaroo on the front.

Stubby holders and Australian flags were also given away during the game, while a spider exhibition will be set up at the arena.

Four’N Twenty pies are an international sponsor of the Philadelphia 76ers.

‘Hopefully we can sell the Four’N Twenty to the Americans and I don’t see why not because they love their food as much as Aussies do,’ Swan said.

‘And especially with Ben being such a big deal in Philadelphia, he’s got a lot of pull.’

Rovell was mercilessly mocked after he posted a video of himself eating a pie with a knife and fork.

‘The [76ers], inspired by Australian star Ben Simmons, are now selling meat pies at their games. I put them to the taste test this morning,’ he wrote on Twitter.

Accompnaying the post was a video of the reporter sampling the pie after slicing it open with a knife and fork.

After he was slammed by Twitter users and even the Queensland Police he apologised.

‘I have been destroyed all day for how I apparently tested out the Australian meat pie being offered at 76ers games. Now that the police are involved, I would like to extend my sincere apologies,’ he wrote.
