Former Fremantle star Cam McCarthy has had his licence suspended for 10 months after he was caught driving with over eight times the legal alcohol limit in his system.

The 28-year-old registered a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) reading of 0.414 when stopped by Western Australia Police near Harvey, approximately 140 kilometres south of Perth.

According to Australian law, it is an offence to drive with a BAC of 0.05 or above.

The West Australian reported that Harvey Magistrates Court on Monday disqualified McCarthy’s driving licence for 10 months and fined him $2,500.

The former AFL player, who did not appear for his hearing in court, was also ordered to pay police costs of $264.

A product of South Fremantle, McCarthy was selected by GWS in 2013 with the 14th pick of the national draft just after current Carlton skipper Patrick Cripps.

He kicked 36 goals in two seasons for the Giants before returning to his home state in 2016 after complaining of being home sick.

McCarthy asked to be traded to Fremantle at the end of 2015 while still under contract with the Giants, who denied his request.

The forward sat out football for the entire 2016 season, before eventually being traded to the Dockers.

He kicked 63 goals in 49 games for the Dockers over three seasons and was the club’s leading goalkicker in his first season with the club.

In August 2020, McCarthy and Fremantle agreed to part ways after the Dockers informed the forward he would be delisted for the following season.

‘We have been in discussions with Cam and his management about his future at Fremantle,’ Dockers general manager Peter Bell said at the time.

‘We believed it was only fair to advise Cam as soon as possible that it was unlikely that he would have his contract extended beyond the end of the 2020 season.

‘On that basis, Cam and his management discussed the situation with his family, and subsequently informed the club that he would like to seek an early release from his contract, which was mutually agreed to by all parties.’

Two months earlier, McCarthy was rushed to hospital after collapsing during a non-contact training session.

The forward was training with teammate when he fell to the ground suddenly and was immediately assessed by the club’s medical staff and admitted to hospital.

After leaving the Dockers, McCarthy returned to the WAFL, signing a two-year deal with South Fremantle.
