Former Chelsea defender urges the Blues to avoid signing ‘FIFA player’ Jadon Sancho – with the Manchester United outcast set to leave Old Trafford in January after bust up with Erik ten Hag

Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has urged the Blues not to sign out-of-favour Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho.

The £73million attacker has been forced to train on his own at the academy and is barred from using first team facilities since publicly branding manager Erik ten Hag a liar over his reasons for dropping him for the 3-1 away defeat by Arsenal in September.

Sancho removed the social media post media but refused to apologise for the outburst resulting in a now prolonged absence from the senior squad.

As a result, the 23-year-old is expected to leave Old Trafford in January with Chelsea reported to be one of the clubs interested in pursuing a deal. 

But Johnson, who won two Premier League titles in 71 appearances with the London club, reckons it would be a mistake to acquire the England international he believes is little more than a ‘FIFA player.’

‘I think it’s a move they should definitely avoid.’ He told Betfred. ‘He has been at Manchester United for a long time and I can’t recall a time where he’s played three games or more in a row. 

‘If you’re not doing it at Manchester United, when you have more established and senior players in the dressing room that can kick you into shape, you’re not going to do it at Chelsea either.’ 

Mauricio Pochettino’s side has been almost exclusively constructed with high-potential young players who have been given long-term deals at Stamford Bridge. The experiment got off to a shaky start but is finally showing signs of progress.

Last weekend’s 4-1 win at Spurs lifted the Blues into the top of the table ahead of a brutal schedule against the likes of Manchester City, Newcastle and Man United. 

‘He is more a FIFA player than a player for a big team in my opinion.’ added Johnson. ‘If he goes to Chelsea where it’s a young dressing room, he’s going to get away with murder and he could potentially get worse. 

‘The kid has clearly got some ability, but there’s something wrong, whether it’s his attitude or his work rate.’
