Former footy star faces a life ban from all racecourses after he threw a SHOE at horses during an event

  • Rhys Palmer, 30, played for Fremantle, Greater Western Sydney and Carlton
  • On Friday at Gloucester Park in Perth, he threw two shoes at horses mid-race
  • Miraculously no horses in the trotting race were impacted by shocking incident

An ex-footballer is facing a life ban from racetracks after throwing two shoes at horses during a trots race.

Former AFL player Rhys Palmer, 30, allegedly threw his footwear as runners went past the winning post with one lap remaining in race six at Perth’s Gloucester Park on Friday night.

Miraculously, no horses were impacted by the bizarre shoe-throwing, with the pacing event won by Patrickthepiranha.

Winning driver Dylan Egerton-Green was stunned by the potentially dangerous incident.

‘It was a shock to see the first shoe coming,’ Egerton-Green told the West Australian.

‘The second one went between the legs of my drive. ‘It was miraculous that no horses faltered, most of them are inexperienced pacers.’

Acting chief steward Rhys Chappell was equally bemused by Palmer’s reckless behaviour, stating ‘we have never seen anything like this.’

It is believed Palmer was immediately detained by irate track security staff before police were called.

The 2008 AFL Rising Star winner, now working in real estate, represented Fremantle, Greater Western Sydney and Carlton during a 123-game AFL career spanning from 2008-2017.
