A former high school principal who was found with blood stains on his shirt has been charged with murdering his wife after telling police that she was ‘depressed’ and that she had gone out for a late night walk but never came home.

James Stan Yarborough, 64, was charged on Tuesday after his 63-year-old wife Karen’s body was found dumped in a wooded area in Dorchester County, South Carolina.

Police had gone to the couple’s home earlier on Tuesday to investigate Karen’s disappearance just hours before her body was found.

Yarborough, who used to be the principal at Summerville High School, told police that he last saw his wife on Monday night when they were home alone together.

He said he was going to bed at about 8pm when Karen said she was going for a walk.

Yarborough said it was ‘normal behavior’ for his wife.

He said she had been depressed of late following a death and illness of a family friend.

In the police report, officers noted that Yarborough had a red stain on the bottom of his shirt when he was speaking to them.

Yarborough allegedly told police he was on blood thinners and the blood must have been his.

During an inspection of the home, police said they found what appeared to be a single bullet hole in the floor of the bedroom.

No casings were found nearby.

Yarborough allegedly said he didn’t own a gun and had no idea how the bullet hole ended up there.

Authorities also noticed that their cars had recent damage to them and several pot plants out the front of their home were broken.

They also found a wheelbarrow at the front of the couple’s house.

Karen’s body was found about 20 miles away in a wooded area on Tuesday night.

Her husband has been charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and obstruction of justice.
