Former Home And Away star Dieter Brummer says he couldn’t stand his on-screen lover Melissa George

Home And Away sweethearts Shane (Dieter Brummer) and Angel (Melissa George) were Australia’s most-loved young couple on television in the 1990s.

But it seems the duo were anything but amorous off-screen, with Dieter claiming that he and Melissa couldn’t stand each other in real life.

According to News Corp, Dieter’s revelations appear in the show’s upcoming 30th anniversary special, Home And Away: Endless Summer, which is slated to expose some of the show’s darkest off-screen secrets and scandals.

‘We had to look like the perfect couple in public’: Former Home And Away star Dieter Brummer has revealed he couldn’t stand his on-screen lover Melissa George

‘There was a lot of pressure on us. We had to look like the perfect darling couple in public,’ Dieter reportedly says in the program, adding: ‘It wasn’t like anything off screen, it wasn’t like anything off screen.’

Dieter made headlines in 2012 after he revealed he hated working with Melissa and even asked producers to kill off his character after he had had enough of her diva-like demands.

He told Woman’s Day at the time: ‘We may have been love interests on the show but the chemistry was far from real!’

Meanwhile, Melissa has made no secret of her grievances with the long-running soap.

In 2012, she famously denounced her legacy as a Home And Away during an interview with The Morning Show.

‘I don’t need credibility from my country anymore. I just need them all to be quiet,’  she snapped.

‘If they have nothing intelligent to say, please don’t speak to me anymore. I’d rather be having a croissant and an espresso in Paris or walking my French bulldog in New York City.’

She went on: ‘I’ve never spoken out about it because I have to be the loyal good Aussie, who goes away and comes home.’

‘But I’m a really hardworking woman and people have to respect me for what I’ve done,’ Melissa declared.
