Former janitor reveals public bathroom secrets, including which bathroom you should never use

Janitor dishes on which stall you should use in public bathrooms – and the three toilets you should never use

  • A former janitor said you should never use the first bathroom stall as it’s dirty
  • She also said you should visit stalls on the left, and avoid the disability option

A janitor has revealed the secrets to finding the cleanest public bathroom – and the one toilet you should never visit.

Jennifer Cullison, 26, picked up the three bathroom secrets by working as a janitor for two years, and studying a PhD in human behaviour.

The American student advised her followers to never use the first bathroom, always visit the stalls on the left, and avoid using a disability bathroom.

‘I’m going to tell you which stalls in a bathroom are used the least and therefore are the cleanest,’ Jennifer said.

She explained that she used to carry out hourly checks on the toilets and replace the toilet paper so she noticed which stalls were used the most.

‘I’m also an anthropology PhD student so I study human behaviour,’ she added.

She said that ‘the biggest thing’ to bear in mind in public bathrooms is that the first few stalls are the dirtiest and most used.

‘Go to the farthest stall from the door to the bathroom because people usually go into the first couple of stalls,’ Jennifer advised.

‘The ones in the back, especially in big bathrooms, never get used.’

Her second piece of advice is that if the bathroom has stalls lining either side, you should ‘always’ go left, as everyone else is more likely to go right.

‘If there are stalls on either side of the bathroom, you’re gonna want to go to the left because most people go to the right,’ she explained.

‘I think that might have to do with like a left right handed thing.’

The three things you should never do in a public bathroom:

1. Never go to the bathroom closest to the entrance, use the stall furthest away

2. Never go to the stalls on the right of the bathroom, always turn left

3. Never use a disability stall

Her final tip is to avoid handicap stalls at all costs, as it may prevent someone who actually needs it from using it.

The woman explained that most adults don’t use these, but kids ‘love novelty’ and will go right into the stalls.

Jennifer’s followers were very grateful for the tips, which they said answered questions they had thought about for years.

‘Thank you so much for this information, I think about this literally every time in a public restroom and I always pick the second farthest one in the back,’ one woman said.

However, some people wondered if everyone might be using the back as they assume everyone uses the first stall.

‘I’ve read the opposite? That most people avoid the first and second stalls as they feel they’re the most used? I give up,’ one woman commented.
