A former Liverpool star has announced their desire to find a new club for the next season to write ‘the last chapter’ of their career at the age of 41.

The Anfield icon had a storied career on Merseyside, playing 394 games and winning an FA Cup, League Cup, Community Shield and the UEFA Super Cup during his nine years.

Since leaving Liverpool in 2014, the player has gone on to feature at some of the game’s biggest clubs such as Bayern Munich and AC Milan, having come through the ranks at Barcelona.

Add Napoli, Lazio, Villarreal and Aston Villa to the list, and you have arguably one of the best football CVs going.

The player – who also won the World Cup and European Championship with Spain – is now on the hunt for a final club after leaving Villarreal, and hopes to start a 24th campaign.

The Liverpool legend is of course Pepe Reina, who has a claim to being the best goalkeeper Liverpool have had in the 21st century behind Alisson.

At 41, though, he is without a club after leaving Villarreal for a second time, despite notching his 1,000th competitive appearance in his professional career last year.

‘It’s not easy to say goodbye to what has been, is and will always be my home,’ the veteran said.

‘Now I need to find the place that will help me write the last chapter, feeling very prepared and motivated to do so.’

Reina joined the Reds on the back of their stunning Champions League win in 2005 – considered one of the greatest games in the history of football.

Jerzy Dudek was the man between the sticks on that occasion, infamously starring in goal with penalty saves off Andrea Pirlo and Andriy Shevchenko, as well as pulling off a staggering double save from former Ballon d’Or winning Ukrainian icon deep into added time.

However Reina usurped his No 1 spot on his arrival, and never really looked back, going on to keep 177 clean sheets from his 394 appearances.

Reina will turn 42 in August, but is keen to continue his playing career, and will now be on the hunt for his final club before potentially hanging up his gloves once and for all.
