Former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani had a moment to forget in Boca Juniors’ Copa Sudamericana clash with Nacional Potosi on Wednesday night.

Cavani, 37, who spent two years at Old Trafford between 2020 and 2022, joined Boca last summer and has enjoyed a positive first year in Argentina, but he missed a sitter in his latest outing for the club.

He looked set for a certain goal as he raced into the penalty box and latched onto a cross from his team-mate, but he somehow tapped the ball wide of the target from just three yards out, despite having the whole of the goal to aim at.

Cavani ended up in the net himself, but the ball did not, as he fell to his knees in disbelief.

The Uruguayan quickly picked himself back up, while his manager applauded the team’s move, but it was still a truly shocking miss from one of the modern game’s greatest strikers.

Fortunately for Cavani, his horror moment did not come back to haunt him as Boca ran out 4-0 winners against their Bolivian opponents.

Cavani did get on the scoresheet in the 14th minute, while another ex-United player, Marcos Rojo, rounded off the scoring in the second half.

The result meant Boca finished in second place in Group D behind Fortaleza after taking 11 points from their six matches.

Cavani featured in four of those games, scoring three goals.

Boca are now due to play a team transferred over from the Copa Libertadores for a place in the last 16, and they will hope Cavani can quickly put Wednesday’s miss behind him for that match.

Boca also have the league to focus on in the meantime, which is just three games old. They have collected four points from a possible nine so far, leaving them three points behind early pace-setters Racing Club.
