Former New York Knicks player Iman Shumpert arrested at Dallas airport for possession of marijuana before a flight to Los Angeles – with the substance legal in California but not Texas

Former NBA player Iman Shumpert was arrested at Dallas/Fort Worth airport on Wednesday afternoon around 2:40 p.m. on charges of felony marijuana possession and a gun in his bag.

According to TMZ Sports, authorities were called after ‘a sizeable amount of a green leafy substance’ was discovered inside of Shumpert’s bag. 

Authorities were then able to confirm that the substance was 6.12 ounces of Marijuana.

The report also claims Shumpert had a Glock magazine and 14 9mm rounds in his bag but didn’t have a gun. 

Yahoo report that there was no gun and that this is not part of the charge against him.

Iman Shumpert was arrested at Dallas/Fort Worth airport on Wednesday 

Shumpert was set to board a 3pm flight to Los Angeles, telling authorities he had to visit his daughter and asking officers if there was anyway he could make the flight, before being told that he would not be able to because he was being placed under arrest.

Marijuana is legal in California, where Shumpert was flying to, but it is not in Texas. 

The police report also claims that while authorities found a magazine for a Glock containing nine 14 millimeter bullets, no gun was recovered at the time. 

He could face up to two years in jail and a $10,000 fine if convicted on ‘state jail felony’ charges.

Shumpert’s NBA career started in 2011 when he was drafted in the first round by the New York Knicks 17th overall after playing his college basketball at Georgia Tech. 

Shumpert remained with the Knicks until 2015 when he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

He would spend the next three seasons playing in Cleveland alongside LeBron James and making the playoffs in all three consecutive seasons. 

The highlight of Shumpert’s time in Cleveland being the 2016 season when the Cavaliers defeated the Golden State Warriors to win the NBA Finals despite falling behind 3-1 in the series.

The next two years of Shumpert’s career would go down as nondescript stints with the Sacramento Kings and Houston Rockets in 2018 and 2019, before spending his final years in Brooklyn.

In his post NBA career Shumpert has kept himself busy and began a successful from professional athlete to mainstream celebrity.

Shumpert appeared on season 30 of ‘Dancing With The Stars’ and eventually winning the competition with partner Daniella Karagach.

Shumpert has also increased focus on the musical career he showed an aptitude for even during his playing career. Shumpert has releasing music under the name ‘IMAN’.

Most recently Shumpert has taken up a key role in the Starz hit series ‘The Chi’.

Over the course of his career Shumpert averaged 7.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.8 assist and was known as one of the better defense players in the league throughout most of his career.
