Former Wimbledon champions Andy Murray and Serena Williams will not play their mixed doubles match together this evening after singles matches on the main courts overran.

Earlier the two were spotted on court enjoying a final practise session as they prepared to team up for the first time tonight against Andreas Mies and Alexa Guarachi. But the superstar duo’s match has now been postponed.

Due to the fading light and poor visibility, late night matches can only be played on Centre Court and Court One.

But America’s 15-year-old Cori Gauff – also known as Coco – defeated sixth seed Polona Hercog from Slovenia after almost three hours on Centre Court, while Canada’s 19th seed Felix Auger Aliassime and Ugo Humbert from France are still battling it out in the third set on Court One.

It is hoped that Williams and Murray will play together tomorrow, but organisers will have to work around Williams’ third round singles clash with Julia Görges of Germany, which is the first match scheduled on Court One tomorrow and begins at 1pm.

Williams and Murray will therefore have to wait for the scheduled time for their mixed doubles match to be announced, though it will certainly take place on either Centre Court or Court One.

Before today’s ball hitting session, Murray admitted the two champions had never even shared a court together.

But this afternoon he and Williams – who is considered one of the greatest players to ever grace the court – appeared relaxed as they chatted, smiled, and shared a jubilant high-five.

The duo have an impressive 26 Grand Slam titles between them and their appearance on court and how their partnership works will be fascinating for tennis fans.

The American won the Wimbledon mixed doubles on her one previous appearance 21 years ago, while Murray last played the event in 2006, partnering Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens and making the second round.

He did win the silver medal at the 2012 Olympics playing alongside Laura Robson, which was actually held at Wimbledon.

In a BBC column today Murray admitted they had not played together before but that Williams ‘serves unbelievably well.’

Murray said: I don’t know her that well and we haven’t played together before or spent much time hanging out – so let’s see what happens!

‘But I think we do a lot of things quite similarly on court that should bode well for us as a partnership.

‘Both of us play predominantly from the baseline and we are both good movers and athletes. And she serves unbelievably well.

‘I don’t think we have ever hit together over the years, but hopefully we are going to do that today before this evening’s match.’
