Former WWE champion recovering from ‘freak accident’ with unclear future in company

A former WWE champion is out of action, while recovering from surgery after a ‘freak accident’ during a match in France.

That former WWE champion and longtime company veteran also may have already had his last match for the company, as his contract status is reportedly up in the air.

The former world champion is Bobby Lashley, who has been in his second stint with the WWE since 2018, reappearing on-screen the night after WrestleMania 34 in New Orleans.

Lashley’s second run with the WWE was much more successful than his first, winning the WWE Championship twice.

The highlight of his first run was representing former President Donald Trump in the ring in the ‘Battle of the Billionaires’ in a hair vs. hair match against the late Umaga, resulting in former company CEO Vince McMahon’s hair being shaved off in the ring.

‘I had surgery. A little boo boo, happened in France during a match. Just a freak accident,’ Lashley said to ‘The Laboratory’. ‘They told me I wasn’t supposed to be back for six months. Six weeks, I have the brace off, working out.’

‘My physical therapist was like, “You’re not supposed to be able to do that,”‘ Lashley continued. ‘I’m different. I’m working out and lifting.’

‘I don’t think I’m two months out of surgery now and I’m hitting it pretty hard,’ Lashley added. ‘I think I’ll be ready and cleared in less than a month. At that time, we’ll see what happens.’

Lashley did not expound on what his injury was, or his current WWE contract status.

Last week, Fightful reported there ‘were no creative plans for him in the company moving forward.’

With no context, former rival Big E posted to X with a picture of Lashley and the caption ‘A monster. A specimen. A professional. A gentleman.’

The message has been interpreted as a tribute to a man he may never work with again.
