Former X Factor host Darren McMullen eyeing off breakfast radio gig

He’s the former X Factor host currently kicking goals Stateside as the host of sports show NFL Football Fanatic.

And Darren McMullen has revealed he is eyeing off a spot on Australian breakfast radio, taking on KIIS FM shock jock Kyle Sandilands, who Darren described as ‘toxic’ on air.

Speaking to BW Magazine on Saturday, the 36-year-old said he had a long standing love affair with the medium.

Game on? Former X Factor host Darren McMullen has revealed he is eyeing off a spot on Australian breakfast radio, taking on KIIS FM shock jock Kyle Sandilands, who Darren described as ‘toxic’ on air

‘I have always loved radio,’ he told the publication. ‘Whenever I was back, or shooting stuff in Australia, I would pop in, filling in for Jabba on Nova, or a stint on 2Day, but I absolutely loved it.

While admitting that he did not want to step on Kyle’s toes, he added that, if given the chance, he would take a ‘less toxic’ approach than the shock jock.

‘If I was against them [Kyle and Jackie O], I would prefer to be less toxic,’ he said. ‘Their radio show is salacious and not everybody wants that, you know? But they do that better than anybody I’ve heard.’

Adding that he found Kyle ‘polarising’ Darren also admitted that the KIIS FM host was never boring.

‘Kyle polarises people, but I’ve got to be honest, anytime I’ve ever switched on, it’s never boring and that can’t be said for every radio star in Australia,’ he said.

The move to a non-visual medium could work well for Darren who admitted last year that a cheeky faux pas, on the 2007 MTV Music Video Awards red carpet, cost him work.

The Scottish-born hunk wore a kilt for the awards hiking it up for photographers and bearing his buttocks – proving once and for all what a Scotsman wears under the country’s national dress.

Speaking to TV Week, the 35-year-old revealed that the stunt had cost him dearly, with Darren missing out on a lucrative deal with a Swiss watch manufacturer in 2016 because of the offending photographs.

‘Their legal department had Googled me and seen that photo,’ he told the publication.

‘On the basis of that, they said I wasn’t the right fit for the brand – it was one of those moments where your past comes back to haunt you.’
