Formula E race is stopped after HORROR six-car crash at 150mph as the lead car loses control and causes carnage for those behind… but drivers escape unharmed from dramatic incident

  • Formula E’s Rome Grand Prix was stopped on Saturday after a horror crash
  • Sam Bird lost control and was left stationary at the end of a blind corner
  • The crash affected six cars, but luckily no one was seriously injured

A Formula E Grand Prix was halted on Saturday after an alarming six-car crash in Rome.

In an incident already being described as one of the worst in the series’ history, lead driver Sam Bird lost control of his Jaguar at 150mph and spun out on a congested straight.

He ended up stationary and facing the cars behind him, causing carnage as they tried to avoid a serious collision.

They came out of a blind corner to find Bird’s car lying across the centre of the track.

The first car clipped the Jaguar while trying to avoid it and ended up hitting the barrier, while the three next all managed to avoid the stationary car but hit the wall hard instead.

Six cars were involved in the 150-mph incident, but luckily no one was hurt

The scariest moment came with the fifth car to try and get past. It is not clear if the driver saw the stationary vehicle late or just didn’t have time to change direction, but he crashed straight into Bird’s Jaguar.

It left the track littered with debris, and stewards took the obvious decision to stop the race.

Somewhat miraculously, no drivers were hurt during the incident, although Bird has been taken for further medical checks.

After the red flag, seven of the 21 cars that had started the race were unable to continue, while a 22nd had already been knocked out after crashing during qualifying.

One fan labelled the incident ‘the worst Formula E crash of all time,’ while another said it was ‘absolutely terrifying.’

The race resumed after a 45 minute delay as the track was cleared of debris.

Bird (pictured) has been sent for further medical checks after what Jaguar team principle James Barclay called a ‘nightmare scenario’

Jaguar team principle James Barclay, said of Bird: ‘It is standard procedure to get his medical checks. Fortunately, he seems ok and the other drivers seem ok, but it was a very bad accident.

‘It was a nightmare scenario really, the fastest part of the circuit, a blind corner, but most importantly the car has stayed strong and done its job.’

A statement from Jaguar added: ‘Following a multiple car collision mid-way through round 13, Sam has been assessed and checked by the medical team and is thankfully ok.

‘The team will now focus on repairing his Jaguar I-Type 6 ahead of tomorrow’s race.’
