A larger percentage of Americans want to see President Trump impeached than approve of him.
A survey from the Public Religion Research Institute found that 40 percent of Americans support tossing Trump out of office, while 38 percent approve of the job he has done in his first seven months at the White House.
His response to the Charlottesville violence this week hasn’t helped matters, with CBS News polling showing a majority of Americans disapproved of Trump’s handling of the situation, which left one counter-protester dead.

Fifty-five percent of Americans said said they disapproved of Trump’s response to Charlottesville, Virginia, the same percentage who said Trump’s description of who was to blame was inaccurate.
Trump turned heads on Tuesday when, at a Trump Tower press conference, he doubled down on spreading the blame not only to the white supremacists gathered in the Southern town for a ‘Unite the Right’ event, but those protesting against their racism.
CBS’ pollsters had already started surveying Americans on Trump’s Charlottesville response on Monday, but after Tuesday’s wild press conference disapproval of his handling of the situation rose.
In both surveys, Americans who identify as Republicans held a much more positive view of Trump and agreed with the comments he made this week.
While just 35 percent of the electorate said Trump’s remarks placing blame on ‘both sides’ were accurate, 68 percent of Republicans agreed.
That’s compared to just 10 percent of Democrats and 34 percent of independents.
When asked about his overall handling of the situation, two-thirds of Republicans said they approved.
When Democrats were asked the same question only 10 percent approved.
Thirty-two percent of independents agreed.
There was more agreement across the board on the question of whether the neo-Nazi driving the car that killed 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injured 19 more committed an act of domestic terrorism.
Sixty-three percent of Americans, overall, said it was.
That accounts for a majority of Republicans, 51 percent, along with 73 percent of Democrats and 63 percent of independents.
On the impeachment question, Republicans vehemently disagreed, with only 7 percent backing an ouster of Trump.
Almost three-quarters of Democrats, 72 percent, said they wanted to see Trump booted out of office, along with 38 percent of independents.
Support for impeachment, overall, has increased by 10 points in the last six months, with only 30 percent of Americans supporting the move in February, which was just a month into Trump’s tenure.
The PRRI survey was conducted between August 2 and August 8, before last weekend’s violent events in Charlottesville had taken place.
