In the Netflix series Sofia Vergara plays Griselda Blanco, a Colombian drug lord who grew her cartel into one of the most profitable and notorious in the world.
The role of a drug cartel leader isn’t so far out of the Hot Pursuit star’s experience.
During an appearance on the Spanish talk show El Hormiguero, she told the story of how her brother got caught up in the Colombian drug trade.
‘I lived it. I experienced the 70s, 80s and 90s in Colombia,’ Vergara explained.
‘Unfortunately, my brother was part of the business, and he was killed in 1996 in Colombia. After I had to take my family to Miami. It was a really difficult period in Colombia,’ she revealed.
While portraying the notorious drug lord, known as the Cocaine Godmother, Sofia was completely transformed into Colombian businesswoman in the trailer.
The series is from the makers of the smash hit series Narcos and Narcos: Mexico, and in the new clip, one of the characters from those series is seen: Colombian drug lord Hélmer Herrera, played by Alberto Ammann.
In the trailer, the Modern Family alum can be seen flexing her drug lord muscles as law enforcement talk about how her ‘deadly’ business is ‘incredibly successful.’

According to Netflix, the bilingual crime series is inspired by the life of the savvy and ambitious of Blanco, who they describe as a ‘devoted mother’ that ‘created one of the most profitable cartels in history.’
The synopsis also noted ‘Blanco’s lethal blend of unsuspected savagery and charm helped her expertly navigate between business and family.’
The rest of the star-studded cast includes Alberto Guerra as Dario, Vanessa Ferlito as Isabel, and Christian Tappan as Arturo.
This marks Vergara’s first scripted live-action project since announcing her divorce from Joe Manganiello, in July 2023, after seven years of marriage.
