Australian swimming champion Shayna Jack has been forced to pull out of the World Championships after breaking her hand in a freak accident moments before she was set to race.

The 23-year-old was set to compete in the 100 freestyle heats at the meet in Budapest, Hungary on Wednesday but slipped and fell badly at the warm up pool, severely injuring her hand.

She has been taken to a nearby hospital for scans but said through social media she believes she has fractured her hand.

‘Due to an unfortunate incident in this morning’s training session, I have broken my hand,’ she posted on her social media account.

‘I’m am broken-hearted to announce that I have to withdraw from the rest of the competition and that I won’t have the opportunity to achieve everything I wanted to.

‘However I am still so proud of what I’ve achieved, how far I’ve come and the amazing teammates I’ve been able to medal with. As I always do I turn my focus to the future, and that is the Commonwealth Games.’

A spokesman for the Australian team said it was too early to say whether she would be available for selection for the upcoming Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham, UK next month.

Jack had made a stunning return to the pool since returning from a two-year ban for doping, leading Australia to gold and silver medals in the relays.

She was set to compete in the 50m and 100m freestyle events but will now give up her place.

The prodigy said she is already planning on returning to the pool and is hopeful of still being able to compete in Birmingham.

‘Starting this afternoon I’ll be back in the pool doing a kick session,’ she added.

Several current and former Australian swimmers replied to the post, offering their support for the out-of-luck star.

‘Wowsers… hoping for a super quick recovery,’ legend Giaan Rooney said.

‘Proud of you,’ Kaylee McKeown replied.
