Freed to attack again: Convicted rapist targeted mother and daughter while on release

  • Andy Johnson, 46, was given three life sentences for raping mum and daughter
  • He was given a further six-and-a-half years in 2016 for attempted rape in Jersey
  • Less than a year later, he was released – and tried to rape another mum and child

A man with 52 previous convictions who was given three life sentences in 1999 for raping a mother and her ten-year-old daughter struck again after being released.

Andy Johnson, 46, was given an additional six-and-a-half-year sentence in January 2016 for an attempted rape in Jersey committed ten years previously.

But despite these appalling crimes, he was allowed unsupervised leave from Bethlem Royal Hospital, a psychiatric unit in Beckenham, London.

His leave was approved by the Ministry of Justice less than a year after his conviction for attempted rape, The Sun reports.

From January this year, he was allowed out of the facility for three days a week and five hours at a time to prepare for his full release.

But in February, he broke his curfew, got high and drunk, and then followed a mother and daughter home before forcing his way into their home.

The woman’s partner heard her screams, however, and Johnson fled.

He pleaded guilty to trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence at Croydon Crown Court.

The court also heard he was convicted for indecent assault of a girl aged six in 1999.

The MoJ said it made the decision about Johnson after ‘extremely tough risk assessment’.

Johnson will be sentenced next month, pending reports.

The hospital trust said it is now reviewing his case.
