  • A French expat has called out a ‘gross’ Australian dishwashing habit in a video
  • She was shocked to see Aussies don’t always rinse all the soap suds off dishes
  • Some Aussies thought the practice was ‘normal’ while others said it was ‘weird’

A French woman has sparked a heated debate after sharing her shock at a ‘gross’ dishwashing habit Australians have.

The expat was astonished when she noticed many of her Aussie friends leave soap suds on dishes when letting them stand to dry.

She called the practise ‘completely weird’ in a TikTok clip and while many Aussies agreed others said it was ‘normal’ especially in areas that have experienced droughts and had to restrict water usage.

‘This is not the first time I’m seeing this in Australia and I think it’s completely weird,’ she said in the clip.

‘People in Australia who leave this stuff here as it if was clean and normal,’ she said pointing to a pile of dishes with soap residue being left to dry.

Speaking to an Aussie man off-camera who is assumed to have been the culprit of the ‘unclean’ dishes she asked where he learnt to wash up.

‘Is it like in school or where do you learn this? You see it’s not clean,’ she said to him.

‘Are you serious? You’re going to rinse this right?’

In the exchange the man said he often rinses dishes before he uses them and said it was ‘normal’ to leave a bit of soap behind ‘everywhere’ but the French traveller wasn’t having it.

‘You’re not going to let this dry like this. No, you’re (provoking) me right now,’ she said before asking if she could rinse the residue off a saucepan.

The man said she could dry them with a tea towel as rinsing them would be ‘wasting water’.

The clip has been viewed more than 57,500 times and had many Australians in the comments up in arms as they agreed leaving suds on dishes was ‘definitely not normal’.

‘Nope. Australian born and bred. I don’t want soap on my dishes. I rinse,’ one viewer wrote.

Poll

Is it ‘normal’ to leave some soap suds on dishes after washing them?

‘Suds are chemicals. must rinse,’ agreed a second while a third said: ‘I’m Australian and can’t stand this. If you’re not rinsing them, all the dirt and germs are just smeared around and left on the glass.’

‘My ex-Grandmother in law did this. Like straight out of the suds and into a drying rack. I was horrified,’ a fourth replied.

But not everyone was bothered by dishwashing habit with dozens pointing out rinsing would waste water.

‘Nope when growing up we had drought and single sinks.. I remember drying them with a tea towel with suds on,’ one woman said.

‘If I rinsed it off I would get clipped across the ear for wasting water,’ a second added.

‘Babes we grew up in a drought! We had limited showers, this is clean!’ a third explained.
