Fresh appeal over missing married former UEFA executive

Bernard ‘Bernie’ Ross, 51, has been missing for two months

Police tonight launched a fresh appeal to find a former UEFA executive who has been missing for two months and was thought to be travelling across the south of France on a bicycle.

Bernard ‘Bernie’ Ross told his wife he was travelling to London to see his sister in October and has not been seen by his family since.

The 51-year-old former head of production for European football’s governing body was spotted in Grasse, on the French Riviera, on October 31 but detectives think he may have cycled into Switzerland.

Detectives tonight revealed he may have been spotted in Nyon, Switzerland, at around 9.40pm to 9.50pm local time on Friday.

His wife Jacinta had said he lost his job with UEFA last year and then he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in January and spent six months in hospital.

She last saw him at their home in Oxford, where they live with their four children, at 11am on October 18, when he told them he was going to see his sibling.

However, the family later discovered there had been no trip arranged and the fluent French speaker has not been seen or heard from since.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: ‘Bernard Ross, aged 51 years, is believed to have travelled from Oxford to the south of France on 18 October.

‘Officers working on the missing person investigation, have received a possible sighting of Bernard in Nyon, Switzerland, at around 9.40pm to 9.50pm local time on Friday.

‘Bernard is described as 5ft 7ins tall, of medium build, he is a fluent French speaker and is believed he may have been using a bicycle to travel around.

‘He is believed to have been travelling on foot on Friday.’

The 51-year-old, previously responsible for putting on some of football’s biggest tournaments, left his wallet and mobile phone behind and did not take extra clothes, but was carrying his passport and iPad when he left his family home.

Officers thought he had travelled to the south of France that day and he was spotted in Marseille on October 22.

Chief Superintendent Christian Bunt of Thames Valley Police said: ‘We are continuing our investigation to locate Mr Ross as we have increasing concerns for his welfare.

‘It is believed he does not have access to the medication he requires.

‘We are working closely with police in Switzerland and international authorities as part of our continuing efforts to try to locate him.

‘I would like to reiterate that if anyone sees Mr Ross, they should call police immediately so that we can check that he is safe and well.’
