Freshers attending their first week at university have been sharing experiences from their first night in halls…and the photos aren’t pretty.
From fire alarms being set off in the wee small hours to drunken misadventures and being forced to listen to housemates having sex, students have been posting on Twitter about their first taste of life away from home.
For many undergraduates, yesterday was drop-off day, with weepy-eyed parents bidding their offspring farewell and helping them move into halls.
While a flurry of carefully-decorated bedrooms were posted on Twitter, the snaps of shoebox-sized accommodation newly adorned with the possessions of their latest residents were soon displaced by first night out antics.
And unsurprisingly, there was alcohol involved in many of the later posts.
@aimesio revealed how her first night at university was panning out on Merseyside: ‘First night in da halls and a mystery flat party guest has vommed at the front door, welcome to Liverpool:)’
Many named and shamed their new friends who were pictured in the early hours looking more than a little worse-for-wear next to a toilet.
The emergency services were called upon in some cases, with @HarveySmith89 tweeting: ‘Imagine having to call the fire brigade out on ur first night back at uni #999 #oops’
And others admitted they’d lost vital documents: @_emmakeithpenned: ‘Lost my ID on the first night out at uni.’
@millie_jadee added: ‘First night out at uni and I’ve already lost my driving licence.’
@EmmaSJacobs wrote about the politics of her new flatmates, saying: ‘First night of freshers chatting to some gals in my halls who told me women should give up struggle 4 equality as “we’ll always be weak” 🙁
When it comes to embracing fellow students, some admitted they were worried about who they might end up sharing with.
@alex_ward34 exclaimed: ‘Actually gonna drop out of uni if Iget stuck with vegans or feminists in my flat.’
Elsewhere, second year students reminisced about their own memories of moving into student accommodation for the first time.
@Emily_Macbeth wrote: ‘Seeing lots of people moving into halls of residence today. On my first night in halls my flat mate asked me to take him to the STD clinic.’
And many parents, feeling bereft at their teenager leaving home, were also sent off down memory lane.
