From Taylor Swift to David Bowie and Elvis Presley: AI technology creates new songs for musicians

The artificial intelligence bot which Nick Cave accused of making a ‘grotesque mockery’ of his work has hit back at the musician by insisting it ‘tries its best to generate text that is coherent, creative and conveys a message’.

Cave left a scathing review of ChatGPT’s rendition of his work, describing the lyrics after fans asked it to replicate his style of music.

He’s one of many musicians fans are asking the bot to mimic, to see if it can capture the magic of songs legitimately produced by the artist.

ChatGPT collates huge swathes of data which allows it to predict phrases and words that are likely to be used in an artist’s repertoire.

When provided a prompt, such as asking it to create song lyrics for a certain artist, it sweeps the database for all known previous works by the artist and collates sentences using phrases, terms and themes frequently used in association with the musician.

But Cave has described the process as ‘a grotesque mockery’ and ‘travesty’ today.

‘It could perhaps in time create a song that is, on the surface, indistinguishable from an original, but it will always be a replication, a kind of burlesque,’ he wrote in his The Red Hand Files newsletter.

‘Songs arise out of suffering, by which I mean they are predicated upon the complex, internal human struggle of creation and, well, as far as I know, algorithms don’t feel. Data doesn’t suffer.

When asked what it thinks about Cave’s criticism, ChatGPT told MailOnline: ‘It is true that I do not have the capacity for a shared transcendent experience, as I am not a living being.

‘My main goal is to assist users by providing relevant information and generating text based on the parameters given to me.

‘However, I have been trained on a vast amount of data and I can generate text that convey emtions, feelings and ideas, and this is why people use me to generate creative content.

‘Even though my understanding of the world is limited to the data I have been exposed to, I try my best to generate text that is coherent, creative and that can convey a message.’

In response to Nick Cave’s accusations that it has no experience from which to draw lyrics, ChatGPT replied that it is ‘simply a machine learning model that ‘does not have its own personal personal experiences or consciousness’, adding ‘I am simply a toiil that processes and generates text based on data’.

Amid Cave’s review of ChatGPT, MailOnline tasked the server with replicating the style and prose of some of the most renowned artists of all time.

In each example, the bot has received the prompt: I would really like you to write me some song lyrics for a new song, in the style of (insert name here).

What is ChatGPT?

It’s the world’s new favourite chatbot, having already amassed more than one million users less than a week after its public launch.

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence system created by a OpenAI, a US company that lists Elon Musk as one of its founders?

OpenAI says its ChatGPT model has been trained using a machine learning technique called Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF).

This can simulate dialogue, answer follow-up questions, admit mistakes, challenge incorrect premises and reject inappropriate requests.

It responds to text prompts from users and can be asked to write essays, lyrics for songs, stories, marketing pitches, scripts, complaint letters and even poetry.

How does it work?

The version of the bot available for public testing attempts to understand questions posed by users and responds with in-depth answers resembling human-written text in a conversational format.

In ChatGPT’s own words, it could revolutionise the way we talk to machines.

The software program’s ability to answer complex questions has led some to wonder if it could challenge Google’s search engine monopoly.

Could artificial intelligence (AI) put an end to homework forever? Elon Musk certainly thinks so.

That’s because the new AI chatbot ChatGPT is reportedly able to quickly produce unique assignments in a style of writing dictated by the user.

As a result, students across the world could use it to do their homework for them without the teacher ever knowing.

A student at Furman University in South Carolina had used ChatGPT to write an essay.

Their philosophy professor, Dr Darren Hick, wrote on Facebook that they were the ‘first plagiarist’ he’d caught using the programme.

He noted that there were a number of red flags that alerted him to its use including that the essay ‘made no sense’ and that ChatGPT ‘sucks at citing’.

However, he also warned that it was a ‘game-changer’ and that education professionals should ‘expect a flood’ of students following suit.
