Florida State University has indefinitely suspended its fraternities and sororities after the alcohol-related death of a freshman pledge and cocaine charges for a member of another fraternity.
University President John Thrasher made the announcement on Monday. Thrasher didn’t say how long the suspensions will last.
Andrew Coffey, a pledge at Pi Kappa Phi, died Friday after he was found unresponsive following a party. The university suspended the fraternity following Coffey’s death.
Coffey, from Pombano Beach, Florida, had been found on Friday after the Tallahassee Police Department got a call saying he was unresponsive.
No cause of death has been determined for the civil engineering major and the death is still being investigated.

‘We are overwhelmed with sadness any time we learn of the death of one of our students, and the FSU family provides extensive outreach to their family and friends as they mourn the loss of a young life,’ said FSU Vice President Amy Hecht, in a statement.
‘We do not yet have details surrounding the passing today of student Andrew Coffey, but we will work closely with the Tallahassee Police Department as it investigates to determine the facts surrounding this case.’

‘Pi Kappa Phi has suspended all chapter operations and the members of the chapter have been directed to cooperate fully with all investigative efforts.
