Full-fibre broadband is coming to the UK… in 2023: Quick speeds are only available in 4% of the country and it will cost £5bn to cover the rest

  •  It will take until 2033 for super-fast ‘full-fibre’ broadband to be available across Britain
  • The gold standard broadband is only available in 4 per cent of the country
  • A bid to improve connectivity will require up to £5billion of Government funding

It will take until 2033 for super-fast ‘full-fibre’ broadband to be available across Britain, a Government report has found.

The gold standard broadband, which can download TV shows or movies in seconds, is currently only available in 4 per cent of the country – leaving the UK woefully behind countries such as Japan and Portugal, where access rates are 97 and 89 per cent respectfully.

In a desperate bid to improve connectivity, which will require up to £5billion of Government funding, legislation may be introduced requiring all new homes to be built with superfast broadband. Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright said yesterday: ‘We want everyone in the UK to benefit from world-class connectivity no matter where they live, work or travel.’

Faster speeds from full-fibre could also boost business productivity and mean fewer people move from the countryside into cities, the Future Telecom Infrastructure review found.

By 2025, the Government has pledged to connect 15million premises to full-fibre broadband – and most of the UK will have access to 5G signal.

Alex Neill, of consumer magazine Which?, said: ‘People are tired of being passed from pillar to post when it comes to getting decent broadband connection, with no one seemingly taking responsibility, so it is right that the Government has set out to rectify these issues.’
