Denmark’s Victoria Kjær Theilvig was crowned Miss Universe winner 2024- becoming the first Dane to ever win the competition last night.

The 21-year-old native of Phuket province, who studies international relations at the Faculty of Political Science at Thammasat University, impressed viewers with her answers during the question round.

Suchata, who was the third runner-up, was asked what qualities must someone have to be a truly successful leader, she replied: ‘Empathy, because no matter how good you are, no matter what kind of education you have, in the end, you need empathy to care about your people.’

After Miss Denmark walked away with the crown, viewers rushed to social media claiming ‘Miss Thailand was robbed’, with one person saying: ‘Her answers for both of the questions were on point and has hit its mark!’

Suchata decided to take part in beauty pageants to raise awareness about breast cancer because she underwent an operation to remove a breast tumour 10 centimetres in diameter at the age of 16.

The beauty, who can speak Thai, English and Chinese, was born on September 20, 2003. Her family runs a hotel in the southern island province.

Suchata was a model before entering her first Miss Rattanakosin pageant in 2021. She was the youngest contestant in Miss Universe Thailand 2022, when she won third runner-up with a special award, Miss Natural Beauty.

Miss Nigeria Chidimma Adetshina, who was also a fan favourite, made history as the first Nigerian to secure the first runner-up position at the Miss Universe pageant.

The beauty’s path to Miss Universe has not been without controversy as she previously entered the Miss South Africa pageant but withdrew following criticism of her nationality and allegations from South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs concerning her mother’s documents.

She was later invited to participate in Miss Universe Nigeria and emerged as the winner ahead of 24 other contestants.

During the question round Chidimma was asked ‘which is more important, being liked or being respected; and why?’

She answered: ‘We live in a society where we often don’t feel respected because of who we are, and I feel like when you respect yourself, you respect others around you,’ the beauty queen expressed.

During the preliminary national costume round, which showcased sparkling outfits that represent what each contestant loves about their homelands, Victoria was a Viking goddess.

She said: ‘This costume tells the story of those remarkable figures – women who navigated the seas, led their clans, and celebrated the beauty of life through their courage’, she said on Instagram.

Mexico’s María Fernanda Beltrán finished as the first runner-up, while Nigeria’s Cnidimma Adetshina secured the second runner-up position, while contestants from Thailand, Bolivia, Venezuela, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Russia, Chile, Canada and Peru also made it to the top 12.

This year the pageant aimed to be more inclusive, and accepted women who are married and mothers for the first time, including Miss Universe UAE Emilia Dobreva.

Meanwhile age and body type were also no longer restricted, last year the final 20 included Jane Dipika Garrett the first plus-size contestant to win the Miss Universe Nepal crown.
