Fury over Cate Blanchett’s ‘snarky’ remarks about heavy metal during Margot Robbie interview

Cate Blanchett sparks outrage over ‘snobby’ and ‘snarky’ remarks about heavy metal after learning Margot Robbie is a Slipknot fan

Cate Blanchett has been criticised on social media for her snobbish response to Margot Robbie revealing she is a heavy metal fan.

The Wolf of Wall Street star, 32, admitted she was a teenage headbanger during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, prompting Cate to ask whether anyone ‘really’ likes metal.

Margot didn’t back down, calmly replying that she liked loud and aggressive music when she was younger and still does to this day.

Many viewers flocked to social media to slam the Oscar-winning actress, 53, for her ‘condescending’ and ‘snarky’ views about metalheads, while praising Margot for her varied taste in music.

‘Cate Blanchett was far too condescending here. Shame,’ one person tweeted.

‘I thought maybe it was me who thought Cate Blanchett was being snobby towards Margot Robbie on her love of metal music. It was cringe viewing with Blanchett seemingly looking down her nose. So glad Margot stood her ground,’ another said.

‘Disappointed in Cate Blanchett over her comment to the amazing Margot Robbie about heavy metal music,’ a third agreed.

‘Yet another reason to like Margot Robbie, as if we needed another. Cate Blanchett?’ another commented.

One person said: ‘Baffles me that some people assume metal is somehow objectively bad. What are all these bemused faces and snarky comments for? How unvaryingly dull is Cate Blanchett’s music library? Hooray for Margot Robbie!’

During their joint appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Margot was quizzed on her musical taste by Cate, who questioned whether anyone ‘really’ likes heavy metal.

Margot responded: ‘I genuinely liked it and still do.’

The former Neighbours star said she used to go to Slipknot concerts, and was surprised by how often she would get approached in the crowd by fans of the soap.

She said: ‘There’s a [strong] cross section between Slipknot and Neighbours fans. I never had more people come up to me than when I was at a Slipknot concert.’

‘They were worried about the characters, and would ask if so-and-so’s baby was doing okay, they were genuinely invested in both Slipknot and Neighbours.’
