Gage Wilson: Heartbreaking end to search for man who vanished in Byron Bay hinterland

Human remains have been found in bushland not far from the wreckage of a car belonging to a man who vanished three months ago.

Gage Wilson, 31, was last seen on Hakea Court in Mullumbimby in far northern NSW about 5am on May 18.

His abandoned ute was later found crashed into a tree on Koonyum Range Road in Wilsons Creek in the Byron Bay hinterland.

Mr Wilson did not have his phone on him at the time and it is not clear if anyone else had been in the ute with him.

A massive search party was launched, amid fears he may have stumbled out of his ute and into the bush in a daze after the crash.

Mr Wilson’s heartbroken family took to social media on Tuesday to a reveal sad update they received from police.

Volunteer searchers have uncovered skeletal remains 1km from the wreckage of Mr Wilson’s ute.

It’s understood the remains were found on August 4.

‘The body has been sent to Newcastle for a forensic autopsy and DNA testing to confirm if this may be Gage,’ his sister Niki Manidakis posted on the Help find Gage Wilson Facebook page.

‘Police are 90 per cent sure the body is my brother’s.’

She urged everyone to not engage in anything that deviates from what the family knows about Gage.

‘If you hear speculation and rumours about things that could have happened, please dispel these as we would find these sort of unfounded rumours or talk to be very disrespectful to both our family and especially to Gage,’ Ms Manidakis said.

‘I would like to also take the time to thank everyone that has participated in the searching, shed many tears and invested your time to help find Gage.

‘It is a very sad time for us.

‘I will keep you in the loop with further developments on the results of the DNA analysis.’

‘(Gage is) known for his ability to make us all laugh. He is honest and authentic, and his presence is greatly missed,’ it said.
