Gary Neville has stuck to his pre-season prediction and still insists Arsenal will win the Premier League title this season.
The Gunners have endured a mixed first half of the season and currently sit third in the table, nine points behind leaders Liverpool ahead of their clash with Brentford on Wednesday.
Liverpool have been the surprise package so far in their first season under Arne Slot, with the Reds winning 14 of their 18 matches so far.
The Merseyside club’s title charge has been spearheaded by Mohamed Salah, who is the current top goal scorer and leader in assists.
However, Neville believes it will be Mikel Arteta’s side who will claim their first Premier League title in 21 years, though admitted the current leaders are favourites to go all the way.
‘Sometimes they go through the pain. Liverpool are massive favourites and they’re in great form but there is still a long way to go,’ the former Manchester United defender told Sky Sports.
Gary Neville argued that Arsenal will still win the league this season despite their large deficit
The Gunners trail league-leaders Liverpool by a whopping nine points going into the new year
‘Arsenal have been through the mild last couple of years. They’ve sort of gone to the wire and sometimes when you win the first time it doesn’t happen in the most expected way, things can happen.’
When asked what could derail Liverpool’s challenge, Neville added: ‘Van Dijk. That’s the thing that sticks out for me. That [if] Van Dijk got injured it would be a completely different story.
‘That six points [behind] that Arsenal can go to in a couple of days time would dwindle away quite quickly [without Van Dijk]. He’s such an immense player for [Liverpool].’
Liverpool topped the table on Christmas Day for the first time since the 2020-21 season, when they went on to finish third.
Premier League glory in May would earn the Reds their 20th league title – the joint-most ever alongside rivals United.
