Gary Neville heaped praise on Lisandro Martinez after his stunning opening goal against Liverpool on Sunday.

The defender powerfully struck the ball from within 10 yards of the goal, ricocheting off the cross bar and beating Allison at his near post.

The United legend compared the strike to Ryan Giggs’ goal in the 1999 FA Cup semi-final, when the midfielder scored in the 109th minute to book United a spot in the final against Newcastle.

‘That’s where Manchester United have struggled with a bit of composure and class. It comes from Bruno Fernandes,’ Neville said.

‘Does he cross it? No. He just smashes it off the roof of the net. No chance, Alisson.

‘It’s almost Ryan Giggs-like in the ’99 semi-finals cup replay against Arsenal.’

Giggs’ goal gave birth to an iconic chant that United fans sing against Arsenal, as a jibe to their song about Patrick Vieira.

Vieira gave the ball away to Giggs, who scored a sensational solo goal, dribbling past five Arsenal players to win the game for United.

To the tune of ‘Volare’, Arsenal fans sing: ‘Viera whoah, Viera whoah, he comes from Senegal, he played for Arsenal!’

United fans adapted the tune to instead sing: ‘Viera whoah, Viera whoah, he gave Giggsy the ball, and Arsenal won f*** all!’
