Gary Neville insists England will LOSE if Gareth Southgate doesn’t make ‘drastic changes to the system and personnel’ ahead of Switzerland clash

Gary Neville is convinced England will lose their quarter-final clash with Switzerland on Saturday afternoon unless Gareth Southgate makes ‘drastic changes to the system and personnel.’

Southgate has set his England team up in a 4-2-3-1 formation in each of their first four games at Euro 2024 but he could be set to switch his system up for their next game.

Neville is concerns Southgate’s current tactics won’t cut it and insist the England boss – who has used only 13 different starting players in Germany, with 10 of those players starting in all four matches – must make changes.

In the second episode of Stick to Football: The Overlap Special, brought to you by Sky Bet, Neville said: ‘News has broken that there is a feeling that there could be a change to three at the back [for England] and some quite drastic changes to the system and personnel.

‘To be honest with you, I think it’s needed. Something drastic is needed because if they play like they have been doing, they will get beat. They must do something that changes the dynamic of the performances.’

Southgate is likely to play a back-three on Saturday but perhaps not out of choice. The change has been thrust upon him due to the suspension of centre back Marc Guehi.

Southgate’s team were spotted lining up in a 3-4-3 shape during a training session this week – much to Ian Wright’s excitement. He shared his delight at the tactical change while speaking on the overlap.

He said: I do think that if England play with wingbacks against Switzerland, especially if we can get the left-side clicking, then we’ve got a good chance.

‘It would be a shame if Bukayo Saka played as the left wingback because Gareth Southgate didn’t want to bring a backup left-back for Luke Shaw, and I mentioned that Saka should play there as a solution to the current problem. Saka said that it’s not a position that he wants to play but he’d do it for the team.

‘Ultimately, it’s all about getting the left side of the team going. If Luke Shaw is now fit and can start, then great, but if Southgate doesn’t think that’s the case and plays Saka in that position, then hopefully that will work.

‘The biggest thing that I am concerned about is that Southgate didn’t bring a backup left-back for Luke Shaw, given he’s missed the tournament so far, however I am pleased that we’re still in the tournament and that’s the most important thing.’

Meanwhile, Keane said England fans should get behind the team and insists no one will care if England make it to the final by playing ‘boring football’. Speaking on the Overlap, he said: ‘People should stop complaining about the performances from England because they are still in the tournament and that’s the most important thing.

‘Imagine if you were playing well and got knocked out the tournament, then the reaction would be worse. England have brilliant attacking players who have got the team out of jail and that’s what I thought would happen before the tournament.

‘It’s been a while since the last time you thought England were playing well on a consistent basis, but that struggle is fine when you’ve got match-winning players in your side. If England get to the semi-final or final playing ugly, no one will complain about it.
