The couple gave birth to twin girls in April 2018 but learnt 12 weeks into the pregnancy that one would not survive long after being born.

Their daughter Willow had been diagnosed with anencephaly while still in the womb – a condition meaning she would be born without parts of her brain and skull.

She survived for five hours – a window of time her parents said they would ‘forever cherish’.

Ms Rohan relived the ’emotional rollercoaster’ on Instagram this year, about 12 months after giving birth.

Ms Rohan shared a photo of the footy star and her daughter Bella with the caption: ‘Forever grateful to have this amazing human by side on this crazy adventure we call life.

‘This was last night, Bella woke upset like she does most nights before settling into her deep sleep and I could not contain myself. I wept with her, I couldn’t bare seeing her so upset. It’s never happened before, I was just so overcome with emotion.’

‘This week is proving to be a lot tougher than I thought it would be, I’m so open and honest all the time so I thought I’d be fine. Apparently not, I’m one emotional rollercoaster over here that’s for sure.’

Opening up to Harper’s Bazaar magazine in October last year, Ms Rohan said that the couple made the decision to carry both babies to term.

ANENCEPHALY

Anencephaly is a serious birth defect where babies are born without parts of their brain and skull.

The condition can be diagnosed during pregnancy or after the baby’s birth.

The majority of babies with anencephaly will die after birth.

‘We sat down and said, ”This journey has been written for us. Let’s continue on it”,’ she told the publication.

‘We had about five hours with Willow before she passed. In those five hours, I learnt so much about life and how precious it is.’

‘Even though her time here was so fleeting, she was a very amazing girl.’

The day after the twin’s birth, Rohan wrote on Instagram: ‘Amie, Bella and I soaked up every second we had with Willow, making as many lasting memories as we could all together.’
