From tan-line photos to pictures of people jumping on beaches: Gen Z travellers reveal their social media pet hates for holiday posts (and promise to ditch them when travel starts up)

Gen Z says that when travel starts up again they are going to ditch cliched holiday snaps, according to a survey.
In the study, 42 per cent of young people in the UK say that social media posts with clichéd captions such as ‘catch flights, not feelings’ and ‘my Monday is better than yours’ are the worst to share and would not be replicated on their next travels.
Recreating staged ‘popular’ tourist travel poses (second, 35 per cent), like ‘propping up’ the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and posting selfies that show off tan lines (third, 26 per cent) also featured in the list of the biggest holiday post pet hates, with overly loving couple snaps (fourth, 25 per cent), sharing images of the hotel room (joint fifth, 23 per cent) and posting photos jumping on the beach (joint fifth, 23 per cent) following closely behind.

The survey was commissioned by youth travel provider Topdeck Travel to find out more about how the pandemic has made Gen Z (generally those born after 1995) reconsider what is important to them when it comes to travel.
According to researchers, optimism is in the air for young British travellers, with 93 per cent already planning future travel.
The top future travel plan for young people is to visit a dream destination that is further away from home (32 per cent), followed by ticking off bucket list activities (29 per cent).
Other highly-rated plans are exploring nature and the outdoors (third, 26.3 per cent), seeking out local culture (fourth, 26.1 per cent) and spending time recuperating and relaxing (fifth, 25 per cent).

The survey, which quizzed 1,000 18 to 25-year-olds, also revealed that 39 per cent can’t wait to log off from Zoom calls once restrictions are lifted.
It found that Gen Z will happily say goodbye to increased screen time (36 per cent), eating in (23 per cent) and being in close proximity to the fridge – meaning constant snacking – (20 per cent) when life begins out of lockdown.
Charles Knowlton, global general manager at Topdeck Travel, said: ‘It has been a disheartening year for young people, but our findings show that they are resilient and are ready to bounce back with new travel experiences.

‘Our study has found that Gen Z is fed up with the polished Insta-worthy experiences that we’ve become over-exposed to today. Instead, they seek authentic travel experiences that liberate them from the rules of normal life, once travel restrictions are lifted.
