Lillian Stone, 25, has been charged with murder after her three-year-old son died after being locked in a hot car in College Park, Georgia last week

A mother whose three-year-old son died after being left inside a hot car in Georgia has been charged with his murder.

Lillian Stone, 25, was given the extra charge in the death of her son on Tuesday.

She was originally charged with first-degree cruelty to children after her arrest by Fulton County Police on October 31.

Stone has been accused of leaving her son locked in the car in the driveway of their home in College Park, Georgia last week.

Police received a call from a passerby who noticed the boy in the car.

Before the police got there, Stone went out to the car to check on the boy but found him unconscious.

Stone told authorities she had been running errands and forgot that her son was in the back of the car. Police, however, say they have evidence that proves it was intentional.

She was originally charged with first-degree cruelty but the charges were upgraded when her three-year-old son died in hospital on Saturday

The temperature that day reached 72 degrees, but experts suggest it could have only taken an hour for the inside of the car to get to over 100 degrees.

The child was pronounced dead at a hospital on Saturday.

Stone is being held in the Fulton County Jail without bond.

It’s unclear whether she has an attorney.

A Change.org petition was started by a family friend last week urging the judge to release Stone from custody so she could by his hospital bedside.

It was updated after his death to say she needed to see her son prior to him being buried.
