A German footballer has been taken to hospital after he was allegedly assaulted on a night out.

The star, who plays for Cologne in the second division in Germany, will now likely miss his side’s crunch game against Kaiserslautern on Sunday. Cologne are currently second in the table, but will slip out of that position if they lose and SV Elversberg or Paderborn win their games.

Tim Lemperle, who plays as a forward for the club, was, according to Bild, out on Sunday evening with friends in a borough of Cologne when he suffered a broken nose in a confrontation.

A fight is said to have broken out in a boathouse bear near the bank of the River Rhine, involving Lemperle’s group and another group.

Lemperle and his friends were allegedly attacked at around 9pm local time when leaving the venue before things calmed down.

The player, though, was reportedly taken to a local hospital and stayed in overnight before leaving on Monday morning, two days after he had played against FC Nuremberg in league action.

The police are said to be investigating the incident and are appealing for witnesses.

The forward’s manager, meanwhile – Friedhelm Funkel – admitted the man is unlikely to play a part in the final game of the league season.

‘I know he was physically assaulted on Sunday,’ The Cologne boss said. ‘He sustained facial injuries.

‘The likelihood of him playing on Sunday is slim. It can’t be completely dismissed, but it is slim. I can’t say anything more about it.’

The former Frankfurt forward, who has also played for the likes of Mainz and for Germany at various youth levels, has scored 10 goals for his side this season. He has played mainly as a centre forward, but is also comfortable on the right wing.
